May 10, 2009 well i finally got my sound files, so i made a back-up of the sound files. What I didn't know is it wasn't finished downloading the record's music, so when i had trouble with mods and had to re-download minecraft, i just put the sound files i had gotten from my backup/ i was wondering if the music disc files will download even though i used back up files (I didn't replace the whole new sound. Sound directory (after 1.7.2)[edit]
The sound file for versions after 1.7.2 is located in the indexes directory:

The sound files in version 1.7.2 (specifically 13w42a) and above are scattered and hashed into different folders, which are located in:

Locating specific sound files[edit]
Find the folder indexes, which is found under the same assets folder as objects, where the sound files are indexed and logged in the sounds.json file. Select the version you want and open the sounds.json file with a program that supports it, such as Notepad. Programs such as Notepad++ are recommended to help make the file more readable. Once opened, you may find something that looks like this:
From this, we can determine that menu1.ogg
is hashed (or labeled) as c157c56846f0e50620f808fecd9d069423dd6c41
. Perform a search in the directory objects under assets and you should find a file with the same exact string; this is the file 'menu1.ogg', one of the pieces of music that plays on the menu screen. The first two letters of the file name ('c1') will match the folder that the file is in as well; knowing this can help locate specific files faster.
After locating the file, you can test it to make sure it is the right one by playing it with a media player that is able to play .ogg sound files. If the media player you have cannot play the file, try renaming it with '.ogg' at the end. If this fails too, then it either means the media player you use does not have proper .ogg extension to play the sound, or the file you found is not a sound file.
Note: If you accidentally edit or remove the file from the original directory, the launcher will automatically re-download it again the next time you launch the game. (You must be connected to the Internet when you launch the game. If not, then the sound directory will not be reset and could potentially lead to errors.)
Extracting Minecraft Music On Windows (via Windows Subsystem for Linux)[edit]
- Create a new file (for example from the terminal): vi minecraft-music-extractor.sh
- Paste the following into the file: (when you run the file, it'll ask you what your Windows username is and Minecraft version, the rest is automatic, and outputs to the desktop)
- Update the variables (e.g. MINECRAFT_ASSETS_DIR) with your correct directory paths
- If you want all sounds, replace 'grep music' with 'grep sounds'.
- Run the script from terminal with 'bash minecraft-music-extractor.sh'.

- Create a new file (for example from the terminal): vi minecraft-music-extractor.sh

- You may need to run `chmod u+x minecraft-music-extractor.sh` if the script isn't executing.

- Paste the following into the file:

Old sound directory (pre-1.7)[edit]
If you play the game before 1.7.2, the sound directory is located as follows:

If you have played both the old and new versions, then both the old and new directories will exist in the game files. The old directory is only used for pre-1.7 versions.

Warning[edit]
If you edit, add, or remove sounds directly in the sound directory, executing the launcher and then launching Minecraft while connected to the Internet will automatically re-download and revert any changes you've made to the sound directory, deleting your work. This applies for both the new and old sound directories. Disconnecting from the Internet before launching the game will not revert the files, but this is not recommended. The best method to safely store custom sounds is to create your own resource pack.

sounds.json (sound_definitions.json in Bedrock Edition) is a file used by the sound system in resource packs which tells the sound system what sound files to play when a sound event is triggered by one or more in-game events. This file is located in assets/minecraft
in resource packs, and the default file is located in .minecraft/assets/objects
(assets/resource_packs/vanilla/sounds
on Bedrock Edition), and its hashed name can be found by looking it up in the file .minecraft/assets/indexes/<version>.json
.

File structure[edit]
This file is stored in JSON format, but is represented here using NBT.
- The root Object.
- Sound Event: A sound event. The name is usually separated in categories (such as
entity.enderman.stare
). All default sound events are listed in the table below. (To get a different namespace thanminecraft
the file will need to be under a different namespace; not defining it here.)- replace: true/false. Used only in resource packs. True if the sounds listed in sounds should replace the sounds listed in the default sounds.json for this sound event. False if the sounds listed should be added to the list of default sounds. Optional. If undefined, defaults to 'false'.
- subtitle: Will be translated as the subtitle of the sound if Show Subtitles is enabled ingame. Optional.
- sounds: The sound files this sound event uses. One of the listed sounds is randomly selected to play when this sound event is triggered. Optional.
- The path to a sound file from the 'namespace/sounds' folder. Uses forward slashes.
- A sound file. This Object is used only when the sound requires additional Strings.
- name: The path to this sound file from the 'namespace/sounds' folder. Uses forward slashes instead of backslashes. May also be the name of another sound event.
- volume: The volume this sound will be played at. Value is a decimal between 0.0 and 1.0. If undefined, defaults to 1.0.
- pitch: Plays the pitch at the specified value. If undefined, defaults to 1.0, but higher and lower values can be chosen.
- weight: The chance that this sound will be selected to play when this sound event is triggered. Defaults to 1. An example: putting 2 in for the value would be like placing in the name twice. Only accepts integers.
- stream: true/false. True if this sound should be streamed from its file. It is recommended that this is set to 'true' for sounds that have a duration longer than a few seconds to avoid lag. Used for all sounds in the 'music' and 'record' categories (except Note Block sounds), as (almost) all the sounds that belong to those categories are over a minute long. Optional. If undefined, defaults to 'false'. Setting this to false allows many more instances of the sound to be ran at the same time while setting it to true only allows 4 instances (of that type) to be ran at the same time.
- attenuation_distance: Modify sound reduction rate based on distance. Used by portals, beacons, and conduits.
- preload: true/false. True if this sound should be loaded when loading the pack instead of when the sound is played. Used by the underwater ambience. Defaults to 'false'.
- type: Two values are available: 'sound' and 'event'; 'sound' plays from the name of the file, while 'event' plays from an already defined event. If undefined, defaults to 'sound'.

Sound events[edit]
A sound event is linked to one or more in-game events. Two sound events may share the same sound file, but correspond to different in-game events and/or belong to different sound categories. A few valid sound events aren't included in sounds.json, while others don't have an in-game event associated with them. Any sound event that lacks an in-game event can be played only with /playsound
. All default sound events, the sounds they use, the category they belong to, the subtitle that plays at that event, and the in-game events they are triggered by are listed in the following table.

The sound system divides all blocks into categories to determine which sounds play when a block is placed, destroyed, or walked on.
